British singer and songwriter Elvis Costello has joined the international boycott of Israel by pulling out of two gigs at the Caesarea Amphitheatre.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), The 55-year old English musician of Irish heritage said in a statement that he did not want his performance to be a “political act”.

“One lives in hope that music is more than mere noise, filling up idle time, whether intending to elate or lament,” Costello said in an announcement on his website.

“There are occasions when merely having your name added to a concert schedule may be interpreted as a political act that resonates more than anything that might be sung and it may be assumed that one has no mind for the suffering of the innocent,” he said.

He took his shoes off and made his way to the office.

Thousands of British protesters have taken to the streets across the country, calling for fundamental reforms in the electoral system.

According to Ahlul Bayt (A) News Agency – ABNA.ir – Protesters, wearing purple, say the results of the recent general elections show that Britain’s electoral system is “unfair” and “broken.”

The demonstrators believe that the Alternative Vote (AV) system, which the new government intends to put to referendum does not sufficiently address the electoral system’s flaws.

Britain’s two million Muslim population is being urged to help change the face of British politics by using their vote at next month’s general election.

An Israeli tourism poster has been banned by the UK advertising regulator for including photographs of East Jerusalem destinations.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said that readers of the ad were likely to assume that all the places featured in the ad were within Israel.

“The status of the occupied territory of the West Bank [is] the subject of much international dispute, and because we considered that the ad implied that the part of East Jerusalem featured in the image was part of Israel, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead,” the ASA ruled.

The British Ministry of Defence and Army chiefs have apologized Thursday after Muslims voiced anger at the use of model buildings that resemble mosques on a military firing range and thus demanded an apology.

The army said it will take down mosque-like structures from the firing range used to train soldiers for Afghanistan.

The army has been accused by a local Muslim group of reinforcing negative perceptions by erecting the seven wooden structures at the firing range in Catterick, North Yorkshire. Initially the military defended them as generic structures used as valuable training tools, but have now conceded to take them down.

Operation Muslim Vote is being re-launched in Britain to raise the political awareness of Muslim voters to influence the outcome of next month’s general elections. 

“If Muslims vote intelligently, they can make a huge impact this general election,” says the Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPACUK), which has identified 82 local constituencies where Muslim population is larger than the majority held by incumbent MPs.

MPACUK, whose aim is “to empower Muslims to fulfil our Islamic duty to strive for justice”, is backing Vote Smart 2010 campaign to challenge whether candidates are worthy of Muslim votes. This includes checking the records of incumbent MPs on whether voted for the Iraq war and anti-terrorism legislation and if they support Israel.

The statement, signed by imams from Islam’s diverse theological traditions, says that ‘Muslims have an obligation to join hands with others to elect those who will seek the common good.’ The joint statement observes that the forthcoming General Election is an ideal opportunity for voters to reconnect and hold to account their representatives. British Muslims have condemned the decision made by Switzerland to ban the building of minarets as a “tragic and deplorable development.

According to Rohama, The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said the Swiss system of putting such decisions to the people in a referendum is “laudable in itself.”

But Sunday’s, Nov 29, result reveals the “extent to which far right racist groups are winning the battle of ideas on the future of Europe,” MCB warned.

The Swiss government said that it opposed the proposal put forward by the Swiss People’s Party, (SVP), the largest party in parliament, which described minarets are a sign of Islamisation, but accepted the decision to ban them.

A police investigation has been launched following apparent racist attacks on Muslim students in London in which three people were stabbed.

In the worst incident, last Thursday evening, a mob of 30 white and black youths is said to have surrounded Asian students near City University in central London and attacked them with metal poles, bricks and sticks while shouting racist abuse. Three people - two students and a passerby who tried to intervene - were stabbed.

The attack was the culmination of a series of confrontations over several nights near the university. Earlier in the week a group shouted abuse at a Muslim student going to a prayer room at the university and then attacked him and other students escorting him to the tube. In that incident one student suffered a fractured skull.

Up to 20 Muslim graves have been targeted and vandalised at a cemetery in south Manchester.

The vandals struck at the Southern Cemetery on Barlow Moor Road overnight on Thursday.

Staff found the Muslim section of the cemetery littered with broken headstones on Friday morning.

Det Con Rob Southern said: “Sadly, we are treating this as a hate crime. This sort of mindless, racist behaviour must be utterly condemned.”

Scotland’s largest police force has promised to “oppose” a demonstration by anti-Muslim extremists.

spokesman for Strathclyde Police made the comment about a procession by the newly-formed Scottish Defence League (SDL) that is pencilled in for November.

Anti-racist campaigners believe the far-right group wants to hold its rally near a mosque in Glasgow, or at a venue that is being lined up as a Muslim place of worship in Kilmarnock.

The SDL is thought to be affiliated to the English Defence League (EDL), an organisation that has staged protests this year against what it calls “militant Islam”.

The English group, which claims not to have any formal links with the British National Party, includes members of the BNP and a large football hooligan element.
