“O People! Indeed ahead of you is the blessed month of Allah. A month of blessing, mercy and forgiveness. A month that with Allah is the best of months. Its days, the best of days, its nights, the best of nights, and its hours, the best of hours. It is the month that invites you to be the guests of Allah and invites you to be one of those near to Him. Each breath you take glorifies him; your sleep is worship, your deeds are accepted and your supplications are answered. So, ask Allah, your Lord; to give you a sound body and an enlightened heart so you may be able to fast and recite his book, for only he is unhappy who is devoid of Allah’s forgiveness during this great month. Remember the hunger and thirst of the day of Qiyamah (Judgment) with your hunger and thirst; give alms to the needy and poor, honor your old, show kindness to the young ones, maintain relations with your blood relations; guard your tongues, close your eyes to that which is not permissible for your sight, close your ears to that which is forbidden to hear, show compassion to the orphans of people so compassion may be shown to your orphans. Repent to Allah for your sins and raise your hands in dua during these times, for they are the best of times and Allah looks towards his creatures with kindness, replying to them during the hours and granting their needs if he is asked …

The French Cabinet has agreed with a draft act on prohibition of hejab in public places.

According to Ahlul Bayt (A) News Agency – ABNA.ir – The French Cabinet agreed with the bill that calls for prohibition of Hejab in public places on Wednesday, setting the stage for presentation of this measure at French Parliament.

Meanwhile, the French President Nicolas Sarkozy has claimed that: “The French government has taken steps which were difficult, but the path chosen is just.”

Based on this bill, no one is allowed to wear Hejab and those who do will be fined 150 euros.

A Swiss Muslim Family decided to migrate to Bienne because of head scarf ban in Schaffhausen city.

According to Ahlul Bayt (A) News Agency – ABNA.ir – This seven member Muslim family was forced to immigrate to Bienne because wearing headscarf is banned in Schaffhausen schools.

The family was Christian and converted to Islam. “The people in Bienne think free and are more patient, so we can use Hijab freely.” Tina Nasfi the mother of Jessica Di Domenico said.

The swimming classed in Schaffhausen’s school is coeducational; boys and girls have to go to swimming pool at the same time. More than 4 thousand Muslim live in Bienne.

OIC warns of growing Islamophobia in Europe

The head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has warned of a rise in Islamophobia in Europe, saying it would put Muslims and Europe on “collision course”.

The problem of intolerance towards Muslims was “particularly acute” in Europe, Ihsanoglu said in an address to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OCSE) at its Vienna headquarters.

Muslim nations eye further progress at economic summit

The sixth edition of the World Islamic Economic Forum, or WIEF, drew to a close in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday 20^th May with a resolve to explore with Muslim leaders a plan to hold an Economic Summit to develop practical ways in which Muslim countries can enhance their economic growth.

The summit will also explore and develop the contributions that Islamic banking and finance can make to evolve a more sustainable international financial system, a communiqué issued at the end of the two-day forum said.

Copies of the statement containing this proposal will be submitted to officials of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, or OIC.

Recognizing the threat of climate change to all nations, as well as the business opportunities that clean energy-related industries present, the WIEF has decided to evaluate specific actions to be taken to constitute a Clean Energy Development Bank.

France Makes Way for Grand Mosque

French Muslims celebrated on Thursday as construction work began on the country’s biggest mosque in the southern port city of Marseille, a potent symbol of Islam’s place in modern France.

Marseille is France’s second largest city and home to 250,000 Muslims, many of whom are currently obliged to perform their rites in makeshift prayer houses.

With a minaret soaring 25 metres high, the Grand Mosque will hold up to 7,000 people in its prayer room and the complex will also boast a Quranic school, library, restaurant and tea room when it opens in 2012.

British musician joins Israel boycott

British singer and songwriter Elvis Costello has joined the international boycott of Israel by pulling out of two gigs at the Caesarea Amphitheatre.

“One lives in hope that music is more than mere noise, filling up idle time, whether intending to elate or lament,” Costello said in an announcement on his website.

“There are occasions when merely having your name added to a concert schedule may be interpreted as a political act that resonates more than anything that might be sung and it may be assumed that one has no mind for the suffering of the innocent,” he said.

He took his shoes off and made his way to the office.

According to Ahlul Bayt (A) News Agency – ABNA.ir – The absence of two big Islamic groups from government-led talks overshadowed a meeting that agreed to tackle issues such as imam training and veils.

A row over the agenda and guest lists prompted Germany’s Central Council of Muslims to boycott the talks, with its head, Ayyub Axel Koehler, denouncing the conference as being “decreed by the government” and saying Muslims had been ignored.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere had already banned another group, Islamrat, due to its links with an association that is being investigated by government security authorities.

Lars Vilks told The Associated Press a man in the front row ran up to him and head-butted him during the lecture, breaking his glasses but leaving him uninjured. It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attacker.

A video clip of the incident on the website of a Swedish newspaper showed police using pepper spray and batons to hold off an angry crowd shouting “God is great” in Arabic after Vilks was escorted out of the lecture hall.

Thousands of British protesters have taken to the streets across the country, calling for fundamental reforms in the electoral system.

The demonstrators believe that the Alternative Vote (AV) system, which the new government intends to put to referendum does not sufficiently address the electoral system’s flaws.

Belgium could be first in Europe to ban burqa

Belgium soon may be the first European nation to outlaw the burqa and other Islamic garb even as France and the Netherlands are seen moving in the same direction.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), “There is all-party public support for this,” says Leen Dierick, a conservative member of the Belgian parliament’s interior affairs committee that unanimously backed the proposed ban on March 31. The initiative is expected to become law in July and would apply to all public places, including streets.

Swiss voters recently voted to ban the construction of new minarets. In recent years, both mosque and minaret construction projects in many European countries, including Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Greece, Germany and Slovenia, have generated protests, some of them violent.

Girl, 16, banned from school for wearing hijab in Spain

A 16-year-old schoolgirl has been banned from classes in Spain after refusing to remove her Islamic headscarf, re-igniting the national debate over the hijab.

Najwa Malha, who was born is Spain to Moroccan immigrants, has been excluded from classes at the state-run Camilo Jose Cela School in the Madrid suburb of Pozuelo after being told that her hijab was in violation of school dress code.

The decision has sparked debate in Spain where there are no clear guidelines over the wearing of Islamic headdress in state schools.

Over 2 million Muslims urged to change shape of British politics

Britain’s two million Muslim population is being urged to help change the face of British politics by using their vote at next month’s general election.

The Palestinians in Europe are making preparations for holding their eighth annual conference that will kick off within weeks in the German capital Berlin and highlight the issue of prisoners and the right of return.

Misleading Israel tourism poster banned in UK

An Israeli tourism poster has been banned by the UK advertising regulator for including photographs of East Jerusalem destinations.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said that readers of the ad were likely to assume that all the places featured in the ad were within Israel.

“The status of the occupied territory of the West Bank [is] the subject of much international dispute, and because we considered that the ad implied that the part of East Jerusalem featured in the image was part of Israel, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead,” the ASA ruled.

Berlin’s Martin-Gropius Building is displaying masterpieces of Islamic art, including rare copies of the Holy Qur’an.

The Berlin exhibition shows some of the most important works of art from the Muslim world, including pages from ‘Shahnameh’ (Grand Book), a magnum opus by renowned Persian poet Abolqasem Ferdowsi. They are among the most remarkable in the world.

The exhibition also includes the oldest known Arabic manuscript of the ‘Canon of Medicine’ by Avicenna (980-1037), the Iranian physician and most influential Muslim philosopher-scientist, Mehr News Agency reported.

British Army says sorry for ‘mosque’ structures on firing range

The British Ministry of Defence and Army chiefs have apologized Thursday after Muslims voiced anger at the use of model buildings that resemble mosques on a military firing range and thus demanded an apology.

The army said it will take down mosque-like structures from the firing range used to train soldiers for Afghanistan.

The army has been accused by a local Muslim group of reinforcing negative perceptions by erecting the seven wooden structures at the firing range in Catterick, North Yorkshire. Initially the military defended them as generic structures used as valuable training tools, but have now conceded to take them down.

Operation Muslim Vote re-launched to influence UK Elections

Operation Muslim Vote is being re-launched in Britain to raise the political awareness of Muslim voters to influence the outcome of next month’s general elections.

“If Muslims vote intelligently, they can make a huge impact this general election,” says the Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPACUK), which has identified 82 local constituencies where Muslim population is larger than the majority held by incumbent MPs.

MPACUK, whose aim is “to empower Muslims to fulfil our Islamic duty to strive for justice”, is backing Vote Smart 2010 campaign to challenge whether candidates are worthy of Muslim votes. This includes checking the records of incumbent MPs on whether voted for the Iraq war and anti-terrorism legislation and if they support Israel.

A range of leading Muslim scholars today outlines a compelling case for Muslims to vote. The statement, signed by imams from Islam’s diverse theological traditions, says that ‘Muslims have an obligation to join hands with others to elect those who will seek the common good.’ The joint statement observes that the forthcoming General Election is an ideal opportunity for voters to reconnect and hold to account their representatives. It is imperative for Muslims to vote on issues that concern them as citizens’. The Muslim Council of Britain urges mosques to convey this message to Muslim congregations at Friday prayers until polling day.

Quran Contest for Teenagers in Germany

A Quran competition was held in Germany earlier this week for teenagers from different European countries, Akhbar Al-Alam website reported.

The contest was organized by the Erbakan Thought Foundation, a Turkish institute which is based in Germany. Aimed at encouraging European Muslim youth to take part in Quranic activities, the competition was held in two age categories: one for 10-to-13-year olds and the other for teenagers between 14 and 18 years of age.

Yunis Imra Damirchi from Hamburg, Germany, won the top title in the first category and Ali Reza Yaman from the Netherlands came first in the second category.

Established by former Turkish prime minister Necmettin Erbakan, the Erbakan Thought Foundation’s main goal is to familiarize non-Muslims with Islamic teachings.

Muslims worldwide and international organizations including the United Nations have condemned Swiss voters’ approval of a ban on minarets as a manifestation of their “hatred of Muslims.”

The Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief at the Office of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (OHCHR) Asma Jahangir voiced shock on Monday at the outcome of the vote on the initiative to prohibit the construction of minarets in Switzerland.

“Voters gave a strong signal to stop the claim to power by political Islam in Switzerland at the expense of our laws and values,” SVP lawmaker Adrian Amstutz told Swissinfo on Tuesday, December 1.

Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), called on Muslim countries to boycott Swiss consumer and tourism products, and withdraw their funds from Swiss banks in response to Sunday’s referendum to ban construction of minarets in Switzerland.

The Swiss anti-minaret vote, Dr Altwaijri explained, shows deep hatred and enmity towards Islam and Muslims.

The United Nations called Switzerland’s ban on new minarets “clearly discriminatory” and deeply divisive, and the Swiss foreign minister acknowledged Tuesday the government was very concerned about how the vote would affect the country’s image.

U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said Sunday’s referendum to outlaw the construction of minarets in Switzerland was the product of “anti-foreigner scare-mongering.”

The criticism from Pillay, whose office is based in the Swiss city of Geneva, comes after an outcry from Muslim countries, Switzerland’s European neighbors and human rights watchdogs since 57.5 percent of the Swiss population ratified the ban.

Danish, Dutch Populist Parties Want Referendums on Minaret Ban

It’s been criticized as an expression of prejudice at odds with European values of tolerance. But in a referendum on November 29, Swiss voters approved a ban on the building of minarets.

And now populist parties in Denmark and the Netherlands say they want referendums, too. The calls came from two parties known for their tough stances on immigration.

Geert Wilders, head of the Dutch Freedom Party, told the Dutch daily “Volkskrant” that his party “will call upon the government to make a similar referendum possible in the Netherlands.”

British Muslims have condemned the decision made by Switzerland to ban the building of minarets as a “tragic and deplorable development.

According to Rohama, The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said the Swiss system of putting such decisions to the people in a referendum is “laudable in itself.”

But Sunday’s, Nov 29, result reveals the “extent to which far right racist groups are winning the battle of ideas on the future of Europe,” MCB warned.

The Swiss government said that it opposed the proposal put forward by the Swiss People’s Party, (SVP), the largest party in parliament, which described minarets are a sign of Islamisation, but accepted the decision to ban them.

It wasn’t meant to go this way. For months we had been told that the efforts to ban the construction of minarets in Switzerland were doomed. The last surveys suggested around 34 percent of the Swiss population would vote for this shocking initiative.

Last Friday, in a meeting organized in Lausanne, more than 800 students, professors and citizens were in no doubt that the referendum would see the motion rejected, and instead were focused on how to turn this silly initiative into a more positive future.

UN human rights chief Navi Pillay on Tuesday sharply criticized a Swiss vote banning minarets, condemning a growing wave of “scaremongering” in several countries.

The right-wing proposal for a ban, approved by more than 57 percent of voters in a referendum, was “discriminatory, deeply divisive and a thoroughly unfortunate step for Switzerland to take,” Pillay said.

She warned that it “risks putting the country on a collision course with its international human rights obligations,” because of its discrimination against a single religion.

Amnesty International condemns Islamophobic Swiss vote

Amnesty International has expressed deep regret over the Swiss voters’ approval of a ban on minarets, calling it a violation of religious freedom for Muslims.

“The ‘yes’ vote comes as a surprise and a great disappointment,” David Diaz-Jogeix, Amnesty International’s deputy program director for Europe and Central Asia, said on Monday.

“That Switzerland, a country with a long tradition of religious tolerance and the provision of refuge to the persecuted, should have accepted such a grotesquely discriminatory proposal is shocking indeed,” Diaz stressed.

Far-right Swiss politicians rejoice after the majority of voters supported a referendum proposing a ban on the building of minarets in Switzerland.

A clear majority of 57.5 percent of the population and 22 out of 26 cantons (provinces) favored the ban on construction of the symbolic towers — a distinct architectural feature of Islamic mosques from which Muslims are called to prayer.

Far-right politicians pushing for the ban in the past few months have portrayed the minaret as a ’symbol of radicalism,’ but the government officially opposed the ban over concerns that it would harm Switzerland’s image.

The Council of the Spiritual Managements and Centers of Muslims of Ukraine which representatives co-coordinated the Ukrainian quotas with the Ministry of Affairs of the Hajj of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia this summer intends to take henceforth the most active part in the organization of the Hajj for Muslims of Ukraine.

London: Attacks on Muslim students

A police investigation has been launched following apparent racist attacks on Muslim students in London in which three people were stabbed.

In the worst incident, last Thursday evening, a mob of 30 white and black youths is said to have surrounded Asian students near City University in central London and attacked them with metal poles, bricks and sticks while shouting racist abuse. Three people - two students and a passerby who tried to intervene - were stabbed.

The attack was the culmination of a series of confrontations over several nights near the university. Earlier in the week a group shouted abuse at a Muslim student going to a prayer room at the university and then attacked him and other students escorting him to the tube. In that incident one student suffered a fractured skull.

The French government has recently accepted to allow such institutions to start in the following month. They have also accepted Qatar to form the first Islamic bank in France. This change has been faced with severe internal and external pressure stating that France’s hijab ban is in direct opposition to their economical plans.

The pieces were seen by 160,000 people in Madrid, the exhibition contains 190 objects spanning 1,400 years of history, on wood, stone, gold, bronze, ivory, glass, ceramics, fabrics, parchment and paper.

UK: Muslim graves smashed by vandals

Up to 20 Muslim graves have been targeted and vandalised at a cemetery in south Manchester.

The vandals struck at the Southern Cemetery on Barlow Moor Road overnight on Thursday.

Staff found the Muslim section of the cemetery littered with broken headstones on Friday morning.

Det Con Rob Southern said: “Sadly, we are treating this as a hate crime. This sort of mindless, racist behaviour must be utterly condemned.”

Austria– Schoolgirls set Muslim student’s headscarf on fire

Two school girls are facing expulsion after they set a 15-year-old Muslim girl’s headscarf on fire.

The pair attacked the teenager - identified as 15-year-old Diana - during a school trip last week at Catholic charity Caritas’ school for business professions in Graz.

Caritas spokesman Harald Schmied said today (Weds) the motive for the attack had been personal, not religious.

Schmied said two girls responsible for the attack had been warned in writing that they could be expelled if anything similar happened again.

“Islamic pupil wins case to pray at German school”

A Berlin pupil has been awarded the right to perform Islamic prayer rituals at school, in a court ruling passed on Tuesday.

Berlin’s administrative court agreed with the complaint brought by the 16-year-old pupil, who attends a secondary school in the German capital.

Last year the court had provisionally allowed the teenage boy to pray once a day, during a break in lessons.

Education officials in the city feared that the decision could erode the neutrality of schools, leading to “islands of belief.”

The judges ruled that the prayer rituals would not interfere with school operations, and based their decision on the right to religious freedom.

Bulgaria Muslim Mayor to Alarm Europe about Ethnic Terror

The Mayor of the village of Garmen, Ahmed Bashev, announced Tuesday he was going to alarm the Council of Europe about consistent terror over the Muslim population.

Bashev said he will meet with Council of Europe representatives and teacher of religion, Murad Boshnak and the local school principal, Feim Issa, will also attend the talks about human rights violations in the in the Western Rhodopi, an area heavily populated by Bulgarian ethnic Muslim minorities.

The move comes on the heels of increased police presence in Bulgaria’s southern village of Ribnovo, in the Garmen municipality, over alleged religious and ethnic violence.

Swiss drop sanctions against Muslim businessman

Switzerland has lifted travel restrictions on a Muslim businessman once suspected by the U.S. of links to al-Qaida.

The Secretariat for Economic Affairs says it has also unblocked bank accounts belonging to Youssef M. Nada.

Spokeswoman Rita Baldegger said Tuesday the move came after the U.N. Security Council deleted the 80-year-old from a terror-funding list.

Nada was banned from leaving his home in the tiny Italian exclave of Campione for almost eight years.

Nada and his associates have denied links to terrorism and accused Swiss authorities of taking part in a U.S.-led anti-Muslim campaign.

Anti-Muslim demo opposed by Scotland police

Scotland’s largest police force has promised to “oppose” a demonstration by anti-Muslim extremists.

spokesman for Strathclyde Police made the comment about a procession by the newly-formed Scottish Defence League (SDL) that is pencilled in for November.

Anti-racist campaigners believe the far-right group wants to hold its rally near a mosque in Glasgow, or at a venue that is being lined up as a Muslim place of worship in Kilmarnock.

The SDL is thought to be affiliated to the English Defence League (EDL), an organisation that has staged protests this year against what it calls “militant Islam”.

The English group, which claims not to have any formal links with the British National Party, includes members of the BNP and a large football hooligan element.

Christian couple will be tried for offending Muslim woman

Ben and Sharon Vogelenzang are awaiting trial accused of breaching public order by insulting a guest at their hotel in Aintree, Liverpool, about her religion.

The couples, who are members of an evangelical congregation, were arrested by police after getting into a discussion with the woman about the differences between Christianity and Islam earlier this year.

Mrs.Vogelenzang, 54, is understood to have described Muslim dress as putting women into “bondage” while her husband, 53, allegedly described the Prophet Mohammed as a “warlord”.

Belgian MP Blames EU for Superficial View on Hijab

First-ever Belgian Hijab-clad MP Mahinur Ozdemir lashed out at her critics for holding a superficial view on the Islamic veil.

Akhbaralaalam news website cited Ozdemir yesterday as saying that since she got into Parliament has been under fire for her headscarf.

“Many have hurled insult at me calling the Islamic veil reactionaryism and social backwardness,” said the 26 year-old lawmaker of Turkish origin who returned to the Belgian parliament in June.

She added that not only the public opinion and local media but international newspapers and media outlets keep degrading her.

Deploring Europeans for theirstand on Hijab, Ozdemir stated that they ignore capabilities and thoughts of Muslim women who don veil.

She also reminded that headscarf in schools still remains a highly controversial issue in Belgium.

We Want Equality: Muslims Tell Merkel

As German Chancellor Angela Merkel proceeds with negotiating a new coalition after winning a second four-year term, Muslims are hoping her second government would deal with them more positively as equal citizens rather than a potential threat.

“We want Chancellor Merkel and her new government to give us justice,” Nadeem Elias, chairman of the Supreme Council of Muslims in Germany, told IslamOnline.net on Tuesday, September 29.

“We want to feel it’s a government for all people regardless of ethnic, religious and cultural differences. Everybody should feel that their interests are being protected by the government.”

Merkel, 55, secured another four-year mandate after her Christian Democrats (CDU) and its Christian Social Union (CSU) got 33.8 percent of the vote.

The conservative chancellor, dubbed most powerful woman on Earth by Forbes magazine, is working on a new centre-right coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).

UK Eyes Sukuk for Finance

Banking on the booming Islamic finance market, Britain is mulling offering sukuk (Islamic bonds) to finance part of its debt.

“A sovereign sukuk may form a part of our financing for the future,” Business Minister Ian Pearson told Reuters. “I am keen in principle to look to issue sovereign sukuk but conditions have to be right to do that.”

Pearson, economics and business secretary to the UK Treasury, said London could resort to sukuk once economic conditions improve. “Now it is not the appropriate time, but we keep these matters under review,” he said.

Muslim Heads BBC Religion

The BBC, the world’s largest broadcaster, has appointed the first-ever Muslim head of its prominent TV religious programming, drawing cautious welcome from church leaders who want Christianity to feature more prominently in BBC programs.

“Aaqil Ahmed has been appointed to the new joint role of Head of Religion and Ethics and Commissioning Editor for Religion TV,” the BBC said in a statement.

Ahmed will join the state-funded broadcaster from the privately-run Channel 4, where he was commissioning editor for religion.

He will spare the role of overseeing religious broadcasting with Christine Morgan, who has been chosen as head of Religion Radio.

Ahmed is a member of the Runnymede Trust, a body that has championed the ideology of multiculturalism.

British FM urges coalition of West and Muslim world

Terrorism and past conflicts have ‘distorted’ relations between western and Muslim nations but both sides must work together against global challenges, the British foreign secretary said.

David Miliband admitted that London’s interventions from the Crusades and colonialism to the invasion of Iraq had created distrust in many countries, with the latter war causing ‘a sense of bitterness, distrust and resentment’.

But he said the challenges of climate change, terrorism and financial crisis required a united effort born of better understanding on both sides, as well as a resolution of conflicts such as in the Middle East.

Muslim chef loses tribunal case

A Muslim chef who accused the Metropolitan Police of religious discrimination when told he must handle pork has lost his tribunal case.

Hasanali Khoja was told he would be expected to handle pork products at his new job at the Empress State Building in Earls Court, west London.

The 60-year-old from Edgware, north-west London, also said racist gestures were made to him when he complained.

The force was it was “pleased” at the tribunal’s decision.

Dutch anti-Islam lawmaker loses bid to stop hate speech trial

Far-right Dutch extremist Geert Wilders lost a legal bid Wednesday to stop his pending trial for inciting hatred and discrimination against Muslims.

“The attorney general is of the opinion that there are no grounds” for a further appeal, the Dutch Supreme Court said in a statement.

Lawyers for Wilders had sought to overturn a ruling by the Amsterdam Court of Appeals in January that he should be prosecuted for a series of public anti- Muslim statements, particularly for comparing Islam to Nazism.

Illegal halal meat butcher network uncovered

An illegal network of Halal meat providers was found and dismantled in the French region of Toulon today.

Several presumably involved persons have been detained for questioning, among them the alleged head of the ring, a 63 year old farmer and breeder.

Various food dealers and intermediaries as well as religious Muslims who gave their consent for the sale of the Halal meat are amongst the detainees.

The network, according to information from the investigation, had been active since July 2007, its total production equal almost 40 tonnes of meat. The slaughterhouse clients included private buyers, such as Kebab and Halal meat vendors.

London: Thousands join march to protest against Israeli action

Protests against the Israeli offensive in Gaza became heated last night when thousands people gathered outside the country’s London embassy.

People of London have protested Israeli actions against the Palestinians, urging Tel Aviv to put an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

A pro-Palestinian group, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, organized a peaceful street demonstration in central London on Saturday, which attracted thousands of supporters.

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli siege since June 2007 when the democratically-elected Palestinian government of Hamas took control and decided to defend what little land the Palestinians have left.

UK Muslims urged in vote in European elections

The UK’s two million Muslim community is being urged to participate in next month’s elections to the European parliament to prevent right-wing extremists from being elected for the first time.

“Active participation of the Muslim community is imperative to prevent Islamophobic groups like the British National Party (BNP) to gain a foothold because of low voter turnout,” the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said.

“The BNP will be stoking up anti-Muslim hatred to win a seat. They need one million votes, and once they get in, they will join Islamophobes on continental Europe to attack Muslims and other minorities,” the MCB warned.

Liverpool Cathedral Plays ‘Anti-Faith’ Song

The Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral will play Saturday, May 16, an ‘anti-religion’ song, arguing that the move would stir people to consider their relationship with God.

“Ringing the heaviest peal in the world is a challenge in itself,” a spokesman for the Cathedral told the BBC.

“But that the team have been able to produce this performance is fantastic.”

A team of seven volunteer bell ringers will play the controversial 1971 song “Imagine” of former Beatle John Lennon.

Amsterdam Islam Congress resounding success

Around 1,000 people attended the first National Islam Congress in Amsterdam yesterday. The event was organised by the Institute of Islamic Studies in order to highlight Islam’s diversity and promote dialogue.

There were numerous discussions and workshops as well as lectures given by Islamic scholars from numerous countries including Saudi Arabia, United States, Britain and the Netherlands.

Participants, both Muslim and non-Muslim, discussed various issues including citizenship, the position of Muslim women, Sharia law and Salafism, a fundamentalist Sunni Muslim movement.

The Institute for Islamic Studies says today’s congress was an overwhelming success and a follow-up will be organised.

Stickers against Quran displayed in Prague underground, Brno

Prague - Stickers against the Quran have appeared around the mosque in Brno and in the Prague underground probably with the aim to stir up conflicts and encourage prejudices, Vladimir Sanka, deputy head of the Muslim Communities Centre, told CTK on Tuesday.

“We know nothing about it. We are not investigating any similar case,” Prague police spokeswoman Eva Miklikova told CTK on Tuesday. The stickers quote passages from the Quran that are allegedly at variance with the human rights concept in the Western world, which is supported by references to the Human Rights Declaration.

Religious Affairs Directorate to teach Europe about Islam

The Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs will open an office in Brussels next month to teach Europe about Islam.

During the pope’s visit it was decided that Turkey’s presence in Europe proves the possibility of the peaceful coexistence of Islam and Christianity.

Starting from there, it was concluded that Turkey, with its secular state and Muslim identity, could be a good reference for Muslims living in Europe.

In order to block efforts to create misunderstandings about Islam and stir up Islamophobia in the continent, the Directorate of Religious Affairs decided to open a bureau in the European capital. This decision was supported by the pope, too.

Catholic-Muslim relations

Relations between Catholics and Muslims have improved markedly in recent decades after centuries marked by memories of the Crusades and Ottoman military campaigns in eastern Europe.

Here are some of the major step in that process:

1965: The Second Vatican Council said the Catholic Church regarded Muslims “with esteem” and urged both faiths “to forget the past and work sincerely for mutual understanding.”

1968: Vatican begins sending Ramadan greetings to Muslims.
