The Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE) denounced Monday the referendum held in Switzerland on Sunday to ban mosque minarets as a “regrettable setback” to human and religious rights.

The Brussels-based FIOE also condemned the fact that civil rights issues are subjected to a referendum and called on the authorities, human rights groups and the civil society in Europe to stand up against this referendum saying it curtails the rights of Muslims in Switzerland to practice their religion.

The FIOE in a statement expressed its serious concern over the setback of human and religious rights in some European countries and noted that the propaganda of intolerance against Muslims does not serve any country or society which respects human and moral values.

FIOE is an umbrella organization of hundreds of Muslim groups in Europe.
